Introducing S/V Kanthaka, a unique, fully insulated 1998 Alubat Ovni 43. These vessels were designed by Philippe Briand and built by Alubat in Les Sables d’Olonne, France. Known for their pioneering use of aluminum, Alubat produces a limited number of high-quality cruising yachts each year, each crafted entirely from aluminum. This construction ensures durability and versatility, as demonstrated by the Ovni 43’s lifting keel and rudder, which allow it to navigate shallow waters and be easily beached. Many of these robust blue-water cruisers continue to sail the world’s oceans today.
S/V Kanthaka underwent a comprehensive refit in 2024 in Barcelona in preparation for a circumnavigation. After crossing the Atlantic this past winter, she arrived in Rio Dulce, Guatemala. She is presently on the hard awaiting a new owner, covered with a full protective storage tarp.
On the interior, the Alubat Ovni 43 utilizes every bit of space, giving her full length at the waterline. The interior features stunning woodwork and teak-and-holly floors. She is a three-cabin version with a master cabin that includes a double and a single berth, a forward head adjacent to the V-berth and a storage locker under the anchor windlass. There are twin aft cabins, one with a wide double and the other with a double and a single above, plus two heads. The galley retains the original L-shaped layout, and the salon and cabins have large opening hatches for plenty of ventilation and LED lighting throughout.
S/V Kanthaka is powered by a reliable Volvo MD22L 55hp original diesel engine that has been meticulously maintained. During the 2024 refit, mechanics recommended retaining the engine due to its performance and longevity and completed a full mechanical revision, including injector servicing, electrical system updates, and gearbox work. The sail inventory is well suited for a range of conditions, and the 2024 refit included a complete overhaul of the standing rigging using high-quality materials and renewal of key running rigging components.
In addition to the mechanical and sail enhancements, S/V Kanthaka received modern electrical and navigation updates. The mast features updated navigation and floodlights, and 2024 navigation systems were installed, including updated chartplotter, radar, AIS, autopilot and a satellite connectivity system to provide reliable communications in remote locations.
This vessel is equipped for extended offshore passages with ample tankage, power generation and shore-access arrangements to support long periods away from harbor.
S/V Kanthaka is fully prepared with necessary spare parts, tools and safety equipment. In 2020 the deck paint was redone and still looks nearly new.
S/V Kanthaka represents a rare opportunity to own a fully equipped blue-water cruiser, perfect for a live-aboard lifestyle. She is ready to embark on new adventures. Whether you dream of crossing oceans or exploring secluded bays, this versatile and robust vessel is ready to make those dreams a reality.
